Review

Woman E, contrary to what the name suggests, is not a solo singer. Instead, the act is composed of a South African vocalist and a German DJ based in London. Apparently, the duo got their name from the dominatrix in a rather notorious court case.

‘Desire’ is the latest single release from Woman E. What strikes you the first time you listen to the track is that the vocals sounds uncannily similar to Swedish popstar Robyn. They have an almost childlike quality, which – combined with the ‘grown-up’ lyrics – make a bizarre combination. The track opens with the lyrics ‘Long before I knew the name / I was a captive of the flame / Burning pain won’t let go of me again’. This is not groundbreaking. The chorus is similarly unimaginative with ‘You don’t know desire like I do’ repeated several times. There is then a 90′s style dance breakdown reminiscent of Grace or JX, which is no bad thing.

There is no doubt that this track would get you up on your feet in a club. With pounding synths and an impressive beat, it’s just what you need at around 2am when you or your mates are flagging. From that point of view, ‘Desire’ is very functional in that it covers no new ground but conversely, doesn’t set out to. Frankly, it’s intentional throwaway dance-pop music of the highest order. However, who said there’s not a place for that in 2012? There was a time when the charts were dominated by music like this. Retro-chic is in – so download, drink and dance till you’re dizzy.
