What would you define as a ‘good song’? For us, there are some key litmus tests. One is whether you would want to pay good money to download the track. Another is whether your feet are tapping along by the end of it. A third is whether the song is catchy enough to have you singing the chorus on repeat for some time afterwards.
Cue Jackie Scott, a New Yorker with a feisty attitude and a pair of legs to die for. ‘Don’t Mess With Me’ is a slice of electro-pop energy with a pounding beat and enough vocoder to make even the legend that is Cher recoil in horror. Even so, this is an undeniably infectious offering from this fledgling star. What may well strike you upon listening to the track for the first time is an uncanny similarity to Ke$ha. Therefore, your opinion of ‘Don’t Mess With Me’, and Jackie Scott herself, will very much depend upon your opinion of Ke$ha.
The resemblance is apparent in the lyrical content, which basically forms a warning to a hopeless former lover not to make the mistake of ‘messing’ with Scott: ‘Don’t mess with the princess baby / Don’t mess with this bitch / I’m crazy / Don’t mess with me’. The Ke$ha comparison seems particularly well justified when Scott begins taking pot shots at her ex’s prowess: ‘Everyone knows that you can’t even keep it up’. Subtle this is not. Even Scott’s voice has a tone reminiscent of the ‘Tik Tok’ star.
That said, there is something a lot less, well, irritating about Jackie Scott. What sets her apart is the fact that the spunky lyrics are accompanied by an equally bombastic hook and bass line. Frankly, you’d have to be under the petrificus totalus charm not to move your feet to ‘Don’t Mess With Me’. Ke$ha, make way, this princess is crazy.
