Review
While any song containing the couplet ‘She voted for Obama/And she likes to dance to Madonna’ is a five star winner based on that quality alone, the new Scissor Sisters track has a few more tricks up it’s sleeve. Featuring rapper-du-jour Azealia Banks – appearing under the inspired pseudonym Krystal Pepsy – the band’s four minute dancefloor tour-de-force drags the more tolerable aspects of 2011 chart trends right into 2012, with minimal falsetto from Mr Shears. Thankfully the music video – directed by Hiro Murai – is a worthy accompaniment and after repeated viewings proves to be a gift which keeps on giving.
Having left us wondering why no music video director before has paid homage to the climatic scene of Little Miss Sunshine, the seemingly boundless talents of Norhwest Lake Elementary School [sic] are a wonder to behold. The emphatic juvenile beat provides a complimentary soundtrack to the showcase on stage, complete with copious amounts of fluorescent lycra, detailed set pieces and awe-inspiring choreography. All from pre-pubescents throwing shapes to a Jake Shears vs. Azealia Banks rap off – it seems there is more colour than we assumed in the cultural wildernesses of North America. If this is a sign of things to come from 2012, we couldn’t be more excited.
