Review
Golden Globe award-winning TV series Homeland starts this Sunday at 9.30pm on Channel 4 and you should watch it.
CIA operative Carrie Mathison, played to perfection by Claire Danes, is put on probation after a botched operation in Iraq and sent home to join the CIA’s Counterterrorism group in Langley, Virginia. Armed with the knowledge that an American prisoner of war has been turned by Al-Qaeda, the plot complicates when a Delta Force team rescues an American soldier. Sergeant Nicholas Brody, portrayed by Brit actor Damian Lewis, has been missing for eight years, and is found in a compound belonging to known terrorist: Abu Nazir. Is this the soldier in question? Can he be trusted? Carrie Mathison finds herself fighting to uncover the truth about Brody’s story, after he is welcomed home as a war hero.
And so begins Homeland, a twelve-part series the quality of which hasn’t been seen in a while. The writing is superb, the acting equally stellar. To give more of the plot away would be foolish, as it would ruin the experience. You will be left guessing for the most part of the series whether Lewis is a good egg, whether Danes is making it all up, and, as with all good CIA storylines, who the moles are.
Advice to you: Don’t read reviews. But be prepared for the last two episodes. Do not keep large objects at arm’s length when viewing. That’s all we’ll say.
