So So Gay is always on the look out for fresh talent. We’re a diverse and vibrant team – if you feel you have what it takes to become part of it, fill in the form below and we’ll get back to you. At the moment we are particularly keen to hear from people with an interest in writing news and current affairs stories – as well as features and interviews.  These applications will take priority over those looking to provide reviews.

We ask that all contributors write at least three contributions per month, including one on our monthly theme.

Due to the large number of applicants we get, we ask that the majority of writers first sign up as reviewers and, once used to our Style Guide and submission system, consider taking on features and interview assignments.

Please note we are unable to pay any contributors other than agreed expenses.

The following roles are within the editorial and management team.

Sub-editor

You will be responsible for ensuring the highest quality editorial is published by So So Gay. This will include fixing spelling and grammar mistakes, minor reworking of material to ensure it flows well and providing feedback to contributors about the problems with their work, so they can work on their weaknesses. You should have to make only minor corrections – Where work is of a low quality and it would take a lot of time to improve it, you will return the article with notes to the contributor to ammend it themselves.

You should have the ability to research any given subject area, able to quickly check facts. You should also have a good sense of what looks good on a page – whether an image looks too large and needs resized or have its position changed.

You’ll need to have a very good eye for detail, and be able to have a deep familiarity with our style guide.

You will help evaluate new contributor applications, where writers submit samples of their work. We can only accept writers who can turn in high quality copy and adhere to the style guide.

As a behind the scenes role, this can be an unrewarding task, but you will be an integral part of the team and report directly to the Editor-in-Chief and Deputy Editor.

To apply, please email info@sosogay.org

Competition Manager

So So Gay runs a number of competitions, at least one a week, sometimes more, often running concurrently. We need someone to manage these from start to finish.

You will be responsible for liaising with PR agency representatives, ensuring we have a full understanding of exactly what the prize is, when they want the competition run (and whether we can realistically agree to this), how the prize will be issued (sent to us or directly from the PR agency) and then ensuring that a winner is picked and the agency notified within days of the competition closing.

To apply, please email info@sosogay.org

Newsletter Manager

So So Gay aims to publish a weekly email newsletter highlighting the best of our published content. You will work with the editorial team to highlight stories to be featured, collate excerpts and produce supporting editorial text introducing each. You will pull all content into a template and use our email management system to send it out to our subscribers list.

You must have strong HTML skills and the ability to edit images (resizing and cropping). You must have a close eye for detail as you’ll be responsible for the emails being sent to hundreds of subscribers each week.

Film & TV reviews

We are asked to review a large number of films either at screenings (usually shown in London), on DVD or on a private online stream. We also publish TV reviews alongside series popular with our audience (recent examples include Glee, Smash and Game of Thrones). If you are interested in reviewing films or TV series, please submit a sample of your work (pick a recent release) to our film and TV editor. Successful candidates will be asked to either rewrite or submit a new review adhering to our style guide. We’ll keep on those who can demonstrate the ability to follow the Style Guide – we simply don’t have time to do detailed edits to every review we publish. See, we’re tough, but practical!

Film & TV Editor: James Waygood james@sosogay.org

Music reviews

Music is by far the busiest area on So So Gay; we receive dozens of press releases, Twitter messages and phone calls about new artists, new releases from established artists and music events and get invited to preview or attend far more than we can cover. By becoming part of the music reviews team, you’ll have the opportunity to review a wide range of musical releases (usually provided over Soundcloud or a YouTube video or occasionally an old-fashioned CD), and attend launch parties and gigs.

Music Editor: Leo kristofferson leo@sosogay.org

News reporters

Although primarily featured based, we do like to cover the latest LGBT interest news when we can. For this role, you need to be able to respond to emails at short notice, and be willing to pick up the phone to call press offices to get or check quotes and make enquiries.

Ideally a bit of technical knowledge so you can record audio to help produce podcast segments or enhance our reporting would be an advantage but not essential.

A high standard of english is desired, as news stories are published very quickly, without sub editors having time to fully check them.

Please complete as much of the form as you are able. A Twitter account or blog helps us get an idea of how you write but if you don’t have anything already online, please use the larger text box at the end to give us details of why you feel you should become part of the SSG team.

Our writers aren’t limited to contributing to just one topic on the site, but it would be useful if you could indicate which categories you would most like to publish articles to.
