Review: MADD Dessert Lounge

img6251v

It’s safe to say that we’ve not always been the biggest fan of the humble mango. Despite being one of the world’s most popular fruits, as well as being packed full of vitamins and amino acids, we’ve never really taken to them – that is until we visited MADD, a.k.a. ‘Mango Addiction’. The dessert lounge – a popular concept in Eastern cultures that is only just finding it’s roots in Britain – definitely makes itself known to passers by with its colourful facade opening out onto Rupert Street in the heart of Soho. Once you head inside, the decor is bright and modern which offers a really refreshing alternative to many other coffee shops and cafes in the area, and the tables are scattered with old fashioned games like Jenga and Uno which really adds to the relaxed atmosphere.

MADD works with a build-your-own concept for desserts, which start at £4.50 with a topping included in the price. All of the desserts are beautifully presented, and there’s a wide choice of bases with some non-mango options including a rich chocolate tart made with Nutella, alongside a range of ever-changing specials. The mousses are light and airy while bringing out the mango flavours perfectly, while the mango cheesecake is really filling without being boring or stodgy. If, like us, you want to try all of the different options, you can choose three desserts and build your own platter for just £12 – a great price, and more than enough to satisfy two people. The desserts can be accompanied by a great and exciting range of mango cocktails, offering  interesting interpretations of classic drinks including mojitos and margaritas.

What surprised us most was the great range of flavours and options that could be presented from just one key ingredient. We’re definitely a convert, and have found ourselves buying mangos regularly since our visit. The atmosphere inside is spot on – it’s the kind of place that makes you feel really comfortable in any situation. While we saw it as the perfect place for a first date or a catch up with an old friend, the addition of free Wi-Fi makes it a great place for business meetings or essay writing. The downstairs area can be reserved for larger groups, and with opening hours that stretch from 7am in the week to midnight on both Friday and Saturday, it’s a wonderful place to hang out at any time of the day. It’s healthy, fun and good value – what do you have to lose?
