As the rain washes the snow away and we begin another week at work, here’s So So Gay’s of the weeks big news stories:
Britain’s Gay Footballers has unleashed a torrent of controversy this week, with Amal Fashanu highlighting the sad story of her uncle, Justin Fashanu, and his suicide to try and get more footballers to discuss homosexuality in the sport on camera. She also found out exactly what caused her father, John’s, rift with his late brother. As part of the campaign, Gareth Thomas was interviewed on the show, as reported by the Independent. To see the original programme you can check the BBC iPlayer website (or click here).
Craig Roy was found guilty of the murder of Jack Frew on Thursday (reports BBC News), after discussions of blackmail, the victim supposedly exposing himself and a defence consisting mostly of psychiatric evaluations to confirm that he had a personality disorder.
Cynthia Nixon clarified her previous comments about being gay by choice, a comment that drew international fire. She is quoted as saying ‘my recent comments in The New York Times were about me and my personal story of being gay’, more details available on the Sky News’ Website.
And finally, Rolling Stone magazine report on the soaring gay suicide rates in a school district in the US as religious zealots shut down the discussion of homosexuality in school. We hear about LGBT students fending for themselves against bullies and bigotry, and the sad story of 13-year old Brittany Geldert, emphasising that these children are suffering at the hands of an evangelical community with power.
