The Iris Prize presents an exhibition of portraits of some of the prime LGBT talent working in UK film. Photographed by Donald MacLellan, the portraits include Stephen Fry, Sir Ian McKellen, Simon Callow, and Mark Gatiss, among others.
The exhibition hopes to not only celebrate LGBT personalities involved in film – like Phyllida Lloyd, director of Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady - but also to spark discourse about the community’s involvement.
‘I think it will act as a catalyst to explore, highlight and debate the on-screen representation of gay, lesbian and bisexual people and to establish to what extent they feel reflected in film, both in front of, and behind the camera,’ says Matthew Rhys, patron of the Iris Prize and the exhibition.
As part of LGBT History Month, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) Newport will host the exhibition, inviting the public to view the 20 portraits of various personalities.
‘We’re proud to be able to host the Pink Portraits as part of our LGBT History month celebrations,’ says Tricia Dodd, Senior Staff Sponsor of the LGBT Diversity Network Group ONS Newport. ‘For us these portraits are a way of recognising and celebrating the achievement of members of LGBT community, helping to promote a positive and diverse working environment.’
Pink Portraits is on display at the Office for National Statistics Newport, NP10 XG until 28 February 2012. For more information about the Iris Prize visit www.irisprize.org.
