Face-painted, triangulated, and gleefully bizarre gay pop legend Klaus Nomi is paid tribute in London this February. Composer Olga Neuwirth premiers her Hommage à Klaus Nomi in the UK; a selection of four songs arranged for countertenor and ensemble. The London Sinfonitetta is joined by countertenor Andrew Watts, who will also perform Neuwirth’s Five Daily Miniatures.
Nomi, originally a pastry chef, turned himself into a cabaret sensation in New York’s East Village in the 1980s. A mixture of electro, opera, and grand theatrics, Nomi gives even Lady Gaga a run for her money and set an extraordinary benchmark for pop performance for decades to follow.
Watts, a fan on Nomi since the age of 18, has talked to the people Nomi came into contact with, such as David Bowie, in order to learn more about the fascinating performance artist for this concert who marked a place in pop culture.
The evening is set to be an adventurous tribute to the cult figure and near forgotten icon, as well as charting some of Neuwirth’s other works.
Hommage à Klaus Nomi will be performed as part of In Portrait: Olga Neuwirth at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, SE1 8XX on 11 February 2012. Tickets are £12 (concessions available). To book call 0844 875 0073 of visit www.southbankcentre.co.uk.
