Since opening its doors for the first time on 28 October 2008, the Above the Stag Theatre has been a beacon for the gay community with a core programme of gay-themed and gay-interest work. This has extended to musicals, dramas, comedies and even an annual pantomime that has managed to sell out for the past two years.
However, Above the Stag will be losing its home at the end of March amid plans to demolish the Stag pub, which houses the theatre in its function room, in order to make way for a new development in London’s Victoria.
Peter Bull, the theatre’s artistic director and producer, put out a passioned call to find a new home for the theatre on the theatre’s website: ’We are committed to continuing Above The Stag’s success, and we therefore urgently need a new home. We would love to hear from property developers, pubs with unused function spaces, or any other property owner who would welcome a resident theatre. We bring a well respected programme, up to date sound and lighting equipment, and a loyal audience. The Stag Pub’s bar takings over Christmas were up 27% thanks to our panto.’
Bull went on to announce the start up of a fund to help cover the costs of moving the theatre, and for interim storage of props and costumes. He also confirmed that a farewell party would take place on Thursday 8 March promising night of entertainment to say a fond farewell to the Stag.
The theatre also confirmed that the current production, Sleeping with Straight Men, will continue until 26 February and a rehearsed reading of a new production, A Hard Rain, will take place 27 February.
