The Jermyn Street Theatre hosts a new British musical this November. Produced by The Sticking Place, which is celebrating its tenth year, it is written by comedian and playwright Roy Smiles, author of Funny People and West End musical The Rat Pack. Music is provided by Adam Meddigo, creator of So So Gay favourite, Showstopper! The Improvised Musical, who is also the founder of Britain’s only theatre horror festival. On board is producer Danielle Tarento, who was part of the production team for Parade, Company, and Noel & Gertie.
Set somewhere in America in 1952, we find Johnny Reno, a comedian and owner of a run down burlesque club. There’s one problem. During the fervid McCarthyism of the 1950s he’s been blacklisted for not cooperating with the authorities. As the feds move in, Johnny is still unable to find a chance to clear his name. Until he does, it’s all sex, politics, and a battle against a growing of culture of irrational terror.
This new musical is set to paint the town red with sassy songs and salacious mayhem at West End’s premier off-West End theatre in the heart of Piccadilly. With such acclaimed creative talent behind it, it’s definitely something to slip on your suspenders for, and take a cheeky peep at.
Burlesque will play at the Jermyn Street Theatre, London, SW1Y 6ST, from 9 November – 16 December 2011. Tickets are £20 (concessions available). To book 020 7287 2875 or visit www.jermynstreettheatre.co.uk.
