The behemoth show that was the weekend long X Factor final is finally behind us. In its eight year history we’ve never been so relieved for it to be over!
This series has been a whirlwind of upheaval and changes. From a brand-new line up, bad boy Frankie dominating the headlines, Amelia Lily being in then out then in then out again at the last hurdle. Not to mention Louis’s miraculously restored head of hair, Tulisa’s Ofcom ticking-off, Gary Barlow revealing to the nation how completely boring he is and Kelly Rowland epitomising every black female stereotype out there. All this plus BBC One show Strictly Come Dancing gradually stealing the viewer’s attention in the ratings wars.
And so it’s over, and we have a winner.
Little Mix, otherwise known as Jesy Nelson, Leigh-Anne Pinnock, Perrie Edwards and Jade Thirlwall, won the title of 2011’s X Factor superstars. The girl band put together by judge Tulisa won the public vote, even after controversy over their previous band name Rhythmix, and being a bit shaky on the live shows in the first few weeks. The young girls grew as a band and became the first group to win X Factor in its television history.
Smiley hairdresser Marcus graciously took second place and Amelia Lily third. Both these solo acts have been saved from the fate of X Factor winners past – such as the failed Steve Brookstein and Leon ‘where is he now?’ Jackson.
We wave good bye to this year’s X Factor with a smile and heavy sigh of both relief and exhaustion. What was once a Saturday night talent show has now taken over our lives, British media and conversations. It now seems X Factor is so huge and all-consuming people are turning away. Has the show run its course? Are the nation too clued up on how the industry works they don’t fall for the stories and huge coincidences? Who knows? Only the outcome of next year’s Christmas lead up will tell.
