Interview: Tucky Williams

Tucky Williams

With so little lesbian exposure on TV and in films, us girls are fast turning to the internet to catch up on the growing number of web series featuring a glimpse of our lives. One in the latest stream of great series is Tucky Williams’ Girl/Girl Scene, all about the fun and tears of lesbian dating. Jen Kilchenmann caught up with its star and creator for So So Gay.

SSG: Who are you and where you from?

Tucky Williams: I’m Tucky from Kentucky. I have a TV show. I teach yoga. I meditate. I’m a gaylord. I’ve been dead – that was cool. I like philosophy. I love my mum.

Girl/Girl Scene – how did the show come about?

Girl/Girl Scene came from the two years I spent hanging out with my best friend, Casie Lewis. We were having a blast being gay.  We were very into the queer scene and making out with hotties. It was nothing but fun. When my friend Nic Brown suggested I write a pilot for a webseries, I drew from all the good times I had with Casie.

Hmmm… are you sure you didn’t just create it to make out with hot girls?

My secret wish was that the show would garner enough attention that I’d get an awesome girlfriend. Done.

We love the classic lesbian faux pas of getting a little too cosy with a very young dykette. Personal experience?

I had my first girlfriend when I was 19, and she was 16. I didn’t see it as a big deal. Her parents (who were both women) were thrilled that she was finally dating someone mature.

How hard is it to fund a web series?

Our budget until very recently has been $0. We started with nothing but a dream. I think the lesson is that if you want something bad enough, and you’re good at it or willing to learn, then you can make it happen.

But that’s not for everyone – drive and ambition are overrated. Just be you and be happy. ‘Love and do what you will,’ said Saint Augustine.

Looking around on the big and small screen, do you see yourself represented?

Yes, everywhere. But as a lesbian, no. I don’t get too down about it, because now I have my show to represent me. I hope that other girls who are in the same boat, who don’t feel their lesbian lives are represented, can look to GGS and feel comforted.

What are your feelings about current gay cinema?

Gay cinema is what got me here. I saw Go Fish when I was 15, and Guinevere Turner inspired me to become a writer. I studied writing at the University of Kentucky under the tutelage of the late James Baker Hall. He taught me that art is worthless unless it comes from the deepest pain.

And now for a quick fire round: mountain, desert or beach?

Vegas.

Wine, cocktails or beer (if you drink)?

Bourbon.

Morning, noon or night?

The hours of 12am to 4am are best for me.

Car, motorbike or roller skates?

Ice skates.

Blondes, redheads or brunettes?

Yes, please.

Top, bottom or standing?

Sitting in front of my laptop, surfing Tumblr until 4am.

Hot shower, hot bath or ‘washing is so overrated’?

Bubble bath. For two.

Complete the following sentences: ‘When I was five, I…’

…wanted to be an actor. I also thought nothing would be better than getting to see a naked woman.

I like my coffee…

…like I like my women: intelligent and naughty.

My head spins when…

…right round, when ya go down, when ya go down down.

Mornings are for…

…grown-ups.

Girl/Girl Scene is…

…the sexiest, harshest, most realistic view of lesbian life.
