Here at So So Gay we’re always looking for another beauty treatment or way to keep ourselves looking fresh and relaxed. We also occasionally find ourselves in a bit of a sticky financial situation. Not to be deterred from our beauty routines, we turn to whatever is at hand. SSG has raided the fridges and cupboards and come up with a few food-based treatments that don’t cost the world. They can be found already sitting in your kitchen and are screaming out to be smothered on your face instead of being eaten.
First up, and perfect for post-beach holiday recovery, a yoghurt and egg white hair moisturising treatment. Egg white and yoghurt work together with olive oil to give hair back its shine. Beat an egg white and mix with two tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil, one teaspoon of red wine vinegar and two tablespoons of natural yoghurt: a good one to use is Rachel’s Organic Natural Wholemeal Yoghurt. Massage over your hair while you are in the bath, and shampoo off after 15 minutes (use cool water or else the hot water might end up cooking the egg into your hair). The result is a nourished and shiny barnet to be proud of.
With winter around the corner it is always good to have a weapon in your fight against dry, wind-damaged skin. The colder months mean skin can look tired and unbalanced, so you’ll need a nutritious, deep cleansing and moisturising mask to come to your aid. Canelle Beaute suggest one of the simplest things to use is banana and honey. Honey has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties that are great for skin. It is also a humectant: this means it helps attract moisture to skin, making it great for the management of dry skin. Mash one banana with a tablespoon of honey and add a few drops of orange juice. Apply to your face and relax for 15 minutes, remove with a damp cloth and finish with a light moisturiser.
Finally, for an all-over body treatment, try an invigorating coffee scrub from the Shine Spa at Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa. Natural yoghurt is rich in enzymes, so this scrub is very effective for exfoliating your skin. Mix 500ml of natural yoghurt, one tablespoon of coffee powder and one tablespoon of brown sugar in a bowl. Scrub onto dry skin before showering and spend at least 10-15 minutes massaging it onto your whole body. The caffeine in the coffee invigorates tired skin and the brown sugar acts as a natural exfoliant to lift off dead skin cells. For silky soft skin use an all-over body moisturiser once you have patted yourself dry.
You don’t always have to turn to expensive, laboratory-made products to obtain great beauty results. Nature has been providing us with her natural beauty treatments for years. Cleopatra was said to be a firm believer in using dairy and honey for beauty treatments: if it’s good enough for the Queen of Egypt, it’s good enough for us.
