EUROvisual – your weekly Eurovision update!

Guess who?

Guess who?

The weekend has arrived and we’re sure you’re on the edge of your seats waiting for your next fix of all things Eurovision. Wait no more as EUROvisual is here to update you on all the latest news in the run-up to this year’s Eurovision Song Contest.

Blue and Jedward support charity auction in aid of TCF

The 2011 UK representatives, Blue, and Irish act Jedward are going head-to-head in a charity auction to support child bereavement charity TCF. Up for grabs are 14 Eurovision mini pop icon t-shirts, 2 of which will be signed by the members of Blue and Jedward themselves at the contest in Germany. The auction goes live on eBay on Monday 11 April. A worthy cause and a piece of limited edition Eurovision merchandise up for grabs!

Details emerging about London Eurovision Party

Sunday 17 April sees London’s Shadow Lounge host the pre-Eurovision Song Contest Party. Several acts have already signed up to perform at the party, including Raphael Gualazzi, Italy’s first Eurovision entrant since 1997, Maltese entrant Glen Vella, Romania’s Hotel FM and Poli Genova who is singing for Bulgaria in this year’s contest. It looks set to be an evening of much Euro-merriment! Advance tickets are available for £12.50 from www.ticketweb.co.uk. Further information can also be found at the official website.

Country profile: Switzerland

This week’s featured Eurovision nation is the multilingual central European state of Switzerland. The alpine country has the distinction of having won the very first Eurovision Song Contest in 1956 with ‘Refrain’ by Lys Assia. However, despite being the very first winner, Switzerland’s fortunes in the contest have generally been somewhat mixed. Celine Dion (a Canadian) secured a second Swiss victory in 1988 with ‘Ne Partez Pas Sans Moi’ but in recent years, the country has regularly failed to qualify from the semi-finals. This year’s entrant, Anna Rossinelli is hoping to fare much better with the song ‘In Love For A While’. You can check out Celine Dion’s rather interesting dress and hair in the video below!

…And now, ladies and gentlemen, for your weekly dose of Euro-nostalgia

As if Celine Dion’s dodgy couture wasn’t enough to satiate your lust for bygone Eurovision glory, this week’s venture into yesteryear is a gem. Unlike every other edition of EUROvisual, this week we are not bringing you an actual Eurovision entry but rather an interval act. Rewind to 1989. The contest was held in Lausanne and the interval act was a gentleman named Guy Tell who, along with his sister, used a bow and arrow in an attempt to entertain the audience while the votes were being counted. The climax of his act was him firing a rebounding arrow which was meant to split an apple positioned precariously on his head like William Tell. Watch the video below to see the act in its full ‘glory’. Your life may never be the same again!
