David Cairns
David Cairns, Labour MP for Inverclyde, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on HIV & Aids and former Minister of State at the Scotland Office, has died after a short illness at the age of 44. Cairns was one of seven members of LGBT Labour returned after the last general election.
Tom Harris MP posted a tribute to David, saying he was ‘a gifted and popular MP with a political instinct that was second to none’.
Cairns was held in high esteem on all sides of the House, and tributes appeared quickly on Twitter from supporters of all parties.
Chris Bryant MP said ‘David Cairns was a truly lovely man with a great sense of what was right. In words of Thomas hardy he was a good man and he did good things.’
Jamie Reed MP said ‘David Cairns was one of the best people I have ever known and ever will know. The country is poorer for his passing – he made this place better.’
Labour MP Stella Creasy wrote on Twitter ‘Went to see David Cairns in hospital – thought he was getting better so I’m gutted by today’s news. A lovely man – honoured to have known him.’
Cairns is survived by his partner Dermot.
