Envy are making waves in the north east. (L-R: Mea Deen, Ian Bianchi, Jay Jamieson, John Francis)
Jay Jamieson is the youngest member of Envy, a boyband from the north east of England set up as a tribute to Take That and Westlife. The band’s vocals have been compared to the tones of Josh Groban, George Benson, and the Drifters. So So Gay talked to Jay about life in the music industry, and what advice he’d give himself and others.
SSG: How did you become a performer?
Jay Jamieson: I always knew it was something I wanted to do, from a very young age. It always seemed like something amazing to do. I still want to become famous from performing, so hopefully someday it will come true.
What are the best and worst parts of your job?
Being on stage; from the moment you walk on to the second you walk off, it’s a feeling you just can’t describe. I just love every moment. I also love all of the fans and friends you make along the way.
I guess the worst part would be the crazy fans. I don’t hate it, but it can get a bit too much sometimes with them trying to grope and kiss you!
Do you think that being gay affects your role?
Not really. I get asked about it a lot because I’m on the stage; people seem to think its okay to ask me because I’m on stage performing, but they wouldn’t ask a random person.
What’s your idea of a perfect night in or out?
Perfect night in: sharing a lovely hot bubble bath, DVD, meal and snuggle on sofa. A night out is definitely being around your friends partying and drinking, which is always a good laugh!
When did you know you were gay?
Ever since childhood, I guess. I just grew up fancying lads and at first thought it was something bad and embarrassing until I knew there were others out there and I wasn’t alone.
Who are your heroes, and who do you look up to?
I look up to P!nk a lot; she’s a really big inspiration, because what you see is what you get. She doesn’t have to be like anybody to make it big, and I think her views on animal rights and politics are amazing too! Personally, I can’t pick a fault with her. She’s what young teens should be looking up to instead of the trashier pop stars.
What advice would you give to your 15-year-old self?
Do what feels right in your head. Don’t listen to negativity around you, and be who you want to be. You don’t need to follow the flock to become popular; going your own way will make you a much happier person and a better individual.
