So So Gay was recently able to attend the VIP launch of Manchester’s winter gem, the North Pole bar.
A pop-up haven for all things Christmassy, the venue is set up in Cathedral Gardens, next to Urbis in the city centre, with two wonderful bespoke rooms (and lavish third for private parties), complete with faux deer heads, vintage furniture, benches and stumps to sit on.
Arriving on the large decking area outside, we were welcomed by the polite staff and ushered in through blue and white strips hanging from the ceiling, already feeling very fun and in the spirit of things. Once inside, it was time to get snapped with Parky the North Pole bear (a full-sized model, of course), and take in the surroundings. The venue was packed, although it still didn’t feel overcrowded, and the ambience felt like a giant family get together.
While it took a good five or so minutes to be served at the bar, it was more than worth the wait. The North Pole serves three fantastic hot cocktails (priced at £3.50): a ‘Manchester Mulled Wine’, ‘Winter Crumble’ and the classic ‘Hot Toddy’. For those feeling a little more adventurous, at £4.50 you can also sample a ‘Spiced Rum Punch’, ‘La Mumba’ or ‘Cinnamon Stick’. Illy Coffee also serve a range of non-alcoholic winter warmers for those fancying less of a kick!
Everything about The North Pole creates an idyllic Christmas setting, whether you are swinging by for an after work drink or winding down after a strenuous shop in the city centre. If you arrive feeling peckish, never fear. A ‘swinging grill’ positioned on the decking area outside of the bar has a menu including Old English pork, venison, wild boar, corn on the cob and minted lamb (ranging from £2.00-£.400 – very reasonable).
For more information, follow @thenorthpolebar on Twitter, check it out on Facebook, or visit the official website. The site details menu options for private Christmas parties or, alternatively, you can contact a representative from the bar to find out more.
