Amy Winehouse has died at the age of 27. Police sources confirmed that the multi award-winning singer was declared dead after ambulances were called to her home in Camden Square, North London.
A statement issued by the Metropolitan police said:
Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased.
‘On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The singer-songwriter was made famous by her musical talent, but had hit the headlines for her ongoing struggles with alcohol and substance abuse as well as her turbulent marriage with ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil. Winehouse was known for incorporating elements from her personal life into her music; one of her most famous songs – ‘Rehab’, from her second album, Back to Black - talked in depth about her struggles with her addictions and her refusal to enter rehab to receive treatment.
News of Winehouse’s death struck a deep blow with her fans. Approximately 100 mourners gathered near the singer’s home in Camden. Some left floral tributes, while outpourings of grief had been recorded on Twitter. Actor Russell Tovey wrote on the site:
I cannot believe the beautiful giggly warm lovely Amy has gone. Such a sad loss. Poor Amy x
Close friend Kelly Osbourne also went onto the site and wrote:
i cant even breath right now im crying so hard i just lost 1 of my best friends. i love you forever Amy & will never forget the real you!
Police described Winehouse’s death as ‘unexplained’, and said they planned to carry out a post-mortem.
