The Gay Next Door

Lou Carpenter. He's not The Gay.

It's not Lou. Sorry.

Long-running Aussie soap Neighbours finally gets a full-time gay character, after various occasional characters such as Gino the ‘flamboyant’ tailor who loved musical theatre and was Lynn Scully’s bestest friend, but was never openly referred to as homosexual, and some random mechanic whose gayness was used as a comedy way of foiling one of the girls’ advances. We can also reveal that it will be one of the current male cast is going to become a proper card-carrying homo, with all the usual coming-out angst and other stuff that makes for such great TV.

While the gay character came out, after a fashion, on Aussie TV earlier this week, the momentous event won’t be shown in the UK for about a month. Rather than dish out spoilers, we’re going to keep the identity of the soon-to-be gaybour (no?) to ourselves, just for now.

Oh, alright then. If you really want to can’t wait, watch this clip from the Aussie episode.

Some media commentators have declared this an attempt to out-gay Home & Away‘s lesbian storyline, but Susan Bower, Neighbours’ Executive Producer explains that it was pressure from the show’s younger viewers in online forums that led to the development of a gay character.

Sadly, it’s not dear old Harold returning to declare his undying love for Lou. Now there’s your ratings-winner.

Neighbours is an Aussie icon, like Vegemite.” Bower went on to say. And presumably they want to become more of an Aussie icon like, say, aussieBum?

Coming out is hard to do. Some find it easier than others, of course, but it’s fair to say it’s at least a bit terrifying for everyone. My parents were fantastic – I don’t know what I would’ve done if they hadn’t be...
