Never have I been surrounded by such a melting pot of the LGBT community before. Brighton Pride was swarming.
My first Brighton Pride was blessed with decent weather, for which I could only be thankful. Reports from last year’s wash out were far from complimentary.
This also meant a fraction of the donations were taken last year – with some locals blaming this for the smaller parade.
Still there were thousands of people mincing around the seaside town. Preston Park became a gay theme park and they didn’t need the rides to achieve that. Bears, queens, twinks, lesbians, fetishists and more – from all over Europe squeezed in and provided fabulous amusement.
Walking up to Preston Park after the parade – you could tell it was going to get busy – it felt more like being in tube carriage some of the time – just outdoors, in a park, with bears.
Yes – there were lots of bears – and the Camelford Arms sponsored bear tent was quite an interesting place. It wasn’t hard to feel beautiful amongst the hair and leather.
Another of the tents I vistied was the Revenge Pop Music tent – it was good – although I think Popstarz may have been a little missed this year.
Sadly – myself and Scott Johnathon didn’t manage to last until the after parties. Yes – we are weak. Unbeknown to us though was that the street party on St. James Street in Kemptown continues into the next day – so thankfully we got to dance with and stare at more bears and lesbians.
What seemed most refreshing about Brighton Pride was that the whole town seems to embrace the festival – I’d say much more than London does. I’ll certainly be attending again next year – and will endeavor to be even more like a bear.
