A new Tales of the City book! Armistead Maupin’s Mary Ann in Autumn

Mary Ann in Autumn (UK cover)

I am very pleased to have discovered we can return to 28 Barbary Lane – the next Tales of the City book is due to be published on 2 November in the US, and Amazon UK lists 11 November as the release date here.

The focus of Mary Ann in Autum, the eighth book in the series, is Mary Ann Singleton, the central character of the early books in the series, though barely mentioned in the last book, Michael Tolliver Lives.

The publishers blurb states:

Twenty years have passed since Mary Ann Singleton left her husband and child in San Francisco to pursue her dream of a television career in New York. Now, a pair of personal calamities has driven her back to the city of her youth and into the arms of her oldest friend, Michael “Mouse” Tolliver.

Mary Ann finds temporary refuge in Michael’s backyard cottage, where she licks her wounds and takes stock of her mistakes. Soon, with the help of Facebook and a few old friends, she begins to reengage with life, only to confront fresh terrors when her checkered past comes back to haunt her in a way she could never have imagined.

More than three decades in the making, Armistead Maupin’s legendary Tales of the City series rolls into a new age, still sassy, irreverent, and curious, and still exploring the boundaries of the human experience with insight, compassion, and mordant wit.

No news yet on a UK book tour, though Maupin is touring the US over November and early December.

Update: Found mention of one solitary UK date – 23 November at Toppings & Co in Bath.

I devoured Mary Ann in two sittings, so to speak. I find it interesting that the publisher's felt the need to include the Golden Gate Bridge in the cover of the English version. The American version does not have it.

I got to read an advance copy and it's great. Classic Maupin. We get to see old friends and discover what;s new and what's the same, learn tidbits about characters we've met before and a totally over the top plot twist. Readers of the saga will NOT be disappointed.

Can't wait! I think I'm going to have to re-read the series between now and the release :)

If anyone finds out who's hosting the first event in London, I'd be really pleased! Last time he was here he did a signing at Gay's the Word. I think he may have done Prowler too, at least I'm pretty sure I saw signed copies of the book available there.
