La Cage to open on Broadway

The Good As You blog quotes an Associated Press report announcing a Broadway revival of the West End stage show La Cage Aux Folles starring republican supporter Kelsey Grammer.

It’s been confirmed that Kelsey Grammer, a Republican supporter of the presidential campaigns of both George Bushes, Rudy Guiliani, and John McCain, will star in a Broadway revival of the very LGBT-centric Jerry Herman-Harvey Fierstein musical La Cage aux Folles.

Which actually kind of makes sense, considering the musical is all about accepting people for what they are. Who better to understand that concept than a man who wishes to traipse the boards in high heels yet still give thousands to the party whose platform seeks to trip up the same?

I’ve seen the show in London and think it’s fabulous. It doesn’t really bother me what the political leanings of the stars are, so long as they do the show well and allow the audience to experience the story. The story is one of male romance in the face of opposition from the ‘right’ and is pretty moving – the more people who see and understand the show, the better.
